DAYS OF BELGRADE From 16th to 19th of April 2008

This year Days of Belgrade, a manifestation held under the patronage of the City assembly with Mrs. Radmila Hrustanovic presiding the Board, will take place under the slogan “Belgrade is the world”.
We remember this slogan from the near past, and it’s confirmation we found in the winning concept of the author Slavisa Savic. He discovered an unusual and an unexpected coincidence between the map of Belgrade and the map of the world.

As the artist put it, this is not a classic project, this is before all a great discovery. The continental part of the world on the map matches almost identically the populated part of Belgrade on the map and we come to some very interesting and incredible coincidences.

Imagine that in the place of the Atlantic Ocean is river Sava, which runs into the Danube that is in the place of the North Ocean, we can recognize the river delta which is one of Belgrade’s landmarks. River Sava separates Old and New Belgrade, just like on the map of the world the Atlantic Ocean separates two continents, America which we call the New World, and Europe, also known as the Old Continent. Many other similarities can be noticed: Greenland is in the place of Veliko Ratno ostrvo, the parliament coincides with Strasbourg, Gibraltar with Mostarska petlja, Suez channel with Autokomanda, Terazije with Paris, while the church of Saint Sava is in the place of Constantinople. Great Britain and Ireland are where the Belgrade fortress is. House of flowers is where the pyramids are. Marinkova bara matches the location of India, while the Faculty for Dramatic Arts coincides with California - Hollywood.

Belgrade is a cosmopolitan city located at a road junction. And on this map of ours, we find Belgrade on Slavija, in other words, Slavija is a model of Belgrade just like Belgrade is a model of the world. So, it’s not a coincidence we keep repeating that BELGRADE IS THE WORLD, and this project now offers new evidence and arguments.
Since the celebration of Days of Belgrade lasts four days, it is logical that each day should get one side of the world:
16th of April, Wednesday – east: Konjarnik (Japan) and SC “Olimp” (China)
17th of April, Thursday – west: New Belgrade (California – Hollywood)
18th of April, Friday – north: Dorcol (Norway)
19th of April, Saturday – south: Vidikovac (South Africa)

16th of April – point east
Konjarnik and Japan. Construction and architecture are some examples of Japanese skill and craftsmanship. The Eastern gate of Belgrade is a very interesting structure and housing unit. The landmark that will mark this day is a sun-dial which will be placed in the center of the plateau in between the buildings. Also a gallery of murals will be opened along with a performance by “Alektik” with their unusual musical style, modern music played on classical instruments. Sports center “Olimp” on Zvezdara, on the map of Belgrade coincides with China on the map of the world, and so this will be the place where Serbian and Chinese athletes will promote the country that will host this year’s Olympics. Serbian Olympic Committee will take part in the program.

17th of April – point west
Plateau in front of the Western gate, better known as Genex tower, coincides on our map with California, or more accurately Los Angeles. What is most interesting on this location is the connection between film art and its Mecca in Hollywood, with our Faculty for dramatic arts, which is located near by. So this location will be marked by a film program lasting the whole day. With the goal of creating more publicity, best Hollywood look-alike competition will be organized. The winner will get a trip to Hollywood for two. Also, at noon, Mihailo Mitrovic, the architect of Genex tower, will hold a lecture at the amphitheatre of the building on the idea, construction, and the concept in general of the Belgrade towers.

18th of April – point north
This is the point where Marina Dorcol meets Norway. In the space of the Old harbor an exhibition of Norwegian architecture will be held. A second exhibition-future look of Marina Dorcol  will be displayed on the outside. The whole program will be accompanied by electronic music.

The City assembly, exactly at noon, will traditionally host the ceremony of handing out awards by the City of Belgrade for the highest accomplishments in various areas for 2007.

19th of April – point south
The last day of the celebration of Days of Belgrade shows us the parallel between south Africa and south Belgrade which overlap on Vidikovac. This is where improvised stands selling African souvenirs will be placed, and all this will be done in cooperation with the Museum of African art. Bands which nurture African sound will perform: “So sabi” and “Del arno band”.

Central point of the manifestation – Belgrade, is located on the famous square – Slavija, where the official closing ceremony of the Days of Belgrade will be held. On this location, a monumental installation of large proportions will be placed which would become a city symbol – the biggest globe on earth. Also the Belgrade marathon will pass through here, so that the idea of Belgrade is the world will also manifest itself through sport.
