DAYS OF BELGRADE From 16th to 19th of April 2009
Days of Belgrade is the city's biggest festivity which is based on the celebratory tradition of the 1870's, and which, in its new form, is taking place for the seventh time. Every year from 16th to 19th of April, on account of Belgrade's most important historical dates: first mention of the Slav name Belgrade in a written document and handing of the keys of the city to Mihajlo Obrenović, within Days of Belgrade numerous cultural, educational and recreational programs are organized, which include the handing of the city's most important award – Award of the city of Belgrade, to the most distinguished citizens in 15 different fields.
This year's celebration will be unique because of a few happenings which coincide with the Days of Belgrade. The final day of the celebration, next to the big Easter concert at the church of Saint Sava, will be marked by the symbolic revitalization of Skadarlija, one of the city's most ancient and most famous places. A whole range of cultural, touristic, and humanitarian actions during April 19th will give a meaningful impulse to the revitalization of the social and cultural life of Skadarska Street, which has, in the previous period, significantly distanced itself from its roots. Programs which will be initiated during Days of Belgrade will continue to take place until the month of October.
Belgrade, as a big sports center and the organizer of this year's Universiade (University World Sport Games), next to the Belgrade marathon, which takes place on 18th of April, has been awarded the organization of the Final Four of the NLB league. Semi-finals and finals of this competition, which will host Partizan, Red Star, Hemofarm, and Cibona, will take place in the Belgrade Arena, and the best students and most talented athletes from Belgrade schools will receive free tickets for this sports spectacle.
Within the initiative "Belgrade to Belgraders", during the Days of Belgrade, the City will also surprise the youngest ones with a few theater shows: "Branko's disaster" by the Little theater Puž, and "Max Metallic" by Belef center and Puppet theater Pinocchio, and on Saturday and Sunday the gates of the Zoo will be widely open to the Belgrade children and their parents.
Needless to say that our grown up citizens will also have something to look forward to: opening of the exhibition "Pasarela" by the Belgrade fortress at the City parliament and ULUS gallery, exhibition of illustrations of Zmaj's children poems at the Pedagogic museum, Terratorija exhibition in the suburban municipalities, promotion of the book "They gave to their homeland" at the Belgrade city library and "Banjica concentration camp" monograph at the Belgrade historic archive, sightseeing of historic-cultural monuments organized by the Tourist organization of Belgrade, theatre plays "Merchant of Venice" at the Yugoslav drama theater and "Carneval" at Mimart theater, celebrating 25 years of their founding...
Members of the program board of the Days of Belgrade are: Radmila Hrustanović, president, Ivana Avžner, Darijan Mihajlović, Živorad Ajdačić, Jasna Dimitrijević, and Aleksandar Peković. Author of the visual concept is Slaviša Savić, and executive production this year was again handed to Belef center.
